Post 13 – Make a Difference with Accor

Accor — The world’s leading hotel operator and market leader in Europe, is present in 92 countries. It builds a solid vision of sustainable development thanks to the experience of its nearly 170,000 team members employees in Accor brand hotels worldwide and millions of customers around the world. Its vision and commitment to sustainability are recognised by many awards. For example, in 2013, it was included in the United Nations Global 100 for its CSR policy (Accor, 2015).

The PLANET 21 program: In 2012, Accor launched the enterprise-wide PLANET 21 program with 21 commitments to integrate sustainable development by 2015 (Radjou & Prabhu, 2015). It echoes the urgent need to focus efforts in the 21st century to change our production and consumption patterns with the goal of protecting our planet, its people and their environment. The program’s objectives are wide spread in 92 countries (Accor, 2015).

This post mainly focuses on two of the said pillars: health and employment.

〉Ensure healthy interiors: This requires that Accor hotels use at least one eco-labeled product for flooring, painting or cleaning, so that the hotels are more comfortable, attractive and environmentally friendly.

◊ Examples: Hotel’s effort in maximising the use of eco-friendly building materials, furnishings, fittings & equipment. 97% of hotels use eco-labeled products

〉Promote responsible eating: Accor is aware of the harm of obesity and poor eating habits. To prevent people from health problems such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, Accor start making a difference from the 130 million meals a year served in its hotels by providing balanced dishes.

◊ Examples: Novotel Hotel provides refreshments and tasty, healthy meals. Many of the hotel cafes also provide nutrias, low-fat breakfast or 7/24 healthy buffet meals. In total, 97% of hotels with restaurants promote balanced dishes .

〉Prevent diseases: Since 2002, Accor has been engaged in combating HIV/AIDS through programs to train employees, raise awareness among guests and actively involve the tourist industry. With PLANET 21, the Group has expanded its approach for combating chronic diseases and epidemics by adjusting to local health care needs.

◊ Examples: By the end of 2014, 26,474 employees had received instruction on how to prevent HIV/AIDS and 973 hotels had been equipped with condom vending machines. The new Accor E-care website was launched on February 14, 2012 for employees in eleven African countries to visit, providing instructions on how to prevent HIV, AIDS and other diseases prevalent in the region.

Employment (Talent Sustainability):

〉Support employee growth and skills: Accor is a leading hotel school. By partnering up with 17 academies, it helps developing the skills and increasing the employability of its staff.

◊ Examples: About 436,408 days of training had been provided in 2013 with an average of 3,2 days per employee.
In addition, 525 hotels had held training sessions to teach employees the host country’s language. Accor also introduced a unique online training tool, PLANET 21 e-learning module, for employees of all hotel brands. It enables participants to embrace sustainable development issues and the PLANET 21 program’s ambitious objectives, while raising their awareness of the daily actions that can be applied in different parts of the hotel, including guest rooms, restaurants and kitchens. By 2013, 80% of hotel managers are promoted from internal mobility (owned/leased and managed hotels).

〉Make diversity an asset: Accor actively promotes diversity in all aspects of its business, from hiring and career development to training and compensation. Now it enjoys a naturally diverse workforce. This commitment to diversity is structured around formalised undertakings and priorities for 2015 in the following areas:

  • ƒƒdiversity of origins;
  • gender diversity and gender equality in the workplace; ƒƒ
  • integration of people with disabilities;
  • age diversity.

◊ Examples: A relatively high rate of women hotel managers (27%). As of the end of December 2014, there were around 180,000 Accor brand employees worldwide.

◊ Examples: Hotels in Brazil are Listed as one of the “Best Places to Work” by the Great Place to Work® Institute. Moreover, 55 countries had carried out employee opinion surveys and 613 hotels had organized training to prevent psychosocial risks.
